Brief summary of character: Monty Petrelli was born in late 2001 to Nathan and Heidi Petrelli, becoming the second and last addition to their small family, joining his brother Simon who had been born in 1999. Monty's childhood was relatively normal until he was around five. There's not much of his early childhood that he recalls clearly, but he does remember that the unusual sequence of events that would come to plague his family's life started around this time, beginning with his mother's car accident. Heidi Petrelli was a strong woman, but there was something about this that changed his mother and more specifically, the relationship between his parents.
Monty doesn't remember most of that year since as he aged, he remember less and less about the chaos that his sixth year lead to. But some of the most meaningful events that are burned into his brain: his mother's accident and then miraculous healing, his father's victory in the bid for congress, his father's accident, and his Uncle Peter's disappearance. The year long abscence of his Uncle Peter effected his father severely the next year, and Monty honestly hated seeing him that way. His parents relationship was as strained as ever, and it seemed the some of the rare times that Monty saw his father happy in that year was when it was just him, his father, and Simon. Because of this, Monty tried to catch his father whenever he had time, no matter what the reason. Nathan smiled so rarely that year. Monty relished any time that he managed to help his father be happy, even if it was for the briefest moment.
When his Uncle Peter reappeared almost a year later, Monty couldn't have been happier. He'd always liked his Uncle Peter, more so than he liked how happy that his being back made his father, and knowing that he was all right after all of the accidents that had happened in their family already was a relief. As the years continued, though, Monty changed from a sweet hearted child into a bitter adolescent. Being the son of a Congressman was no easy task, and he was often taunted at the private school that his parents had sent he and Simon to for his family being so "screwed-up" as most of the papers reported them to be. Monty wasn't like Simon. Simon seemed to be able to block out the taunts, ignore them and pretend as though nothing was wrong. Monty was much more conscious of these statement and considered them, eventually taking some of the statements to hurt and worrying that there was something seriously wrong with his family like the papers and other kids said.
It wasn't until he was ten and his brother was twelve that he realized just what it was that was so different, so wrong, with the Petrelli family. One evening, not long after deciding to run for President in the 2012 election, Nathan pulled him and Simon aside to explain to them what might be in store for their future. Not only did he address what they might be put through during his bid for the White House and if he did win, but Nathan explained that the Petrelli family was...special. That they could do things that other people couldn't. The explanation that his father gave of his ability to fly, and Uncle Peter's ability to...use other people's abilities confused Monty, momentarily wondering if what the paper said about the Petrelli family being naturally unbalanced was true until Nathan walked over to the open window in the room and actually showed his sons what he could do. Monty was surprised, intrigued, and scared all at the same time. He was just happy that Simon would probably have to deal with it before he would.
As he aged into a teenager, Monty took on the mindset that most teenagers do when they believe something is wrong with themselves, pretend to be apathetic toward anyone else's opinions. By age 14, Monty had taken on a cynical and sarcastic outer shell in order to keep people's opinions of him and his family from damaging his outlook on life too much. The strain on the Petrelli family, who now resided in the White House, to be perfect was monumental. While Simon seemed to throw himself into upholding their father's reputation, Monty thought that it was all bullshit. What would it accomplish if they pretended to be people that they weren't? Wasn't that the exact reason that they hadn't talked to their grandmother for so many years, because she tried to get Uncle Peter to be someone that he wasn't? Monty couldn't help but feel like his mother was just becoming as bad as he'd been told his grandmother had been when it came to keeping up appearances. Because of that, he rarely tolerates her lectures or pays her any sort of mind other than what he is forced to.
When his power emerged, Monty was frightened and confused, not because he didn't know what was happening but because he wasn't able to control it. It was only a lot of compassion from his father and quite a bit of assistance from his Uncle Peter that allowed Monty to have a decent grip on his ability to speed up the molecules of his body and anything that he touchs faster than the speed of light. After a year to get the hang of it, Monty actually became quite confident in his ability, especially when it came to control. He no longer had to worry about falling through the floor during the night or is accidentally kicking it at a bad time. It also gave him what he wanted more than anything, something that would allow him to escape whenever he needed to. And with the way his family was starting to fall apart while trying to maintain a positive front, Monty needed to escape quite a bit.
It was during one of his escapes when he was 16 that Monty ended up going quite a bit farther than he bargained for.
Reason for coming to Torchwood/this universe (and if they fell through the Rift, how did it happen): Fell Through the Rift; Monty had just been looking for a way to escape another one of his parents' arguments. He'd packed up his most vital possessions and slipped into the phoneline to come out in a random spot and spend a night on the town in DC like a normal teenager (without secret service dogging him). However, where he came out was clearly not DC. In fact, he seemed to be on the other side of the pond.
Came through the Rift in 2018, two years into his father's second term.
How will your character "fit" here?: Monty is cheeky, playful, and outgoing. He's friendly and willing to talk to anyone. Not to mention the potential Petrelli angst/confusion.
